FRP Chemical Storage Tank for Corrosive Liquid Applications

An FRP chemical storage tank is engineered around one fact: the liquid inside is trying to destroy its container. The tank answers with a vinyl ester corrosion liner, a resin-rich inner surface and a structural winding calculated for the specific chemical, concentration and temperature.

Used for acids, alkalis, salt solutions, oxidising agents and process effluents, these tanks hold corrosive media for decades where steel would fail in a few seasons. Standard capacities run from 0.5 to 150 m3, vertical or horizontal.

FRP Chemical Storage Tank

Corrosive chemicals sort storage materials quickly. Carbon steel dissolves. Stainless steel holds until chloride or acid concentration crosses a threshold, then pits and cracks. Coatings fail at edges and welds. A properly built FRP chemical storage tank sidesteps the whole problem: its corrosion liner is not a coating applied to the surface, it is the innermost structural layer of the wall itself, rich in vinyl ester resin and reinforced to carry the chemical duty directly.

Outside that liner, alternating winding layers build the pressure and hydrostatic strength, and the resin system is selected for the stored medium – isophthalic polyester for general duty, vinyl ester for acids and oxidisers, and specialty resins where the process demands them. Every tank is specified from the chemical data sheet, not from a catalogue.

FAQ

Q1: Which chemicals can an FRP tank store?
A: Most dilute to mid-concentration acids, alkalis, salts and many oxidising solutions, depending on resin grade. Send the chemical name, concentration and temperature, and we confirm compatibility and resin selection from the corrosion database before quoting.

Q2: Why vinyl ester for the liner?
A: Vinyl ester resin offers the best balance of acid and alkali resistance with mechanical toughness. The liner is resin-rich so the chemical touches resin first, glass second, which is exactly the design intent.

Q3: Can the tank include secondary containment?
A: Yes. Double-wall construction with an interstitial monitoring port is available for hazardous media, and the tank can be paired with a bund wall designed to the same chemical duty.

Q4: What about hot chemicals?
A: Standard vinyl ester systems serve up to about 80 degrees C depending on the chemical. Higher temperatures are reviewed case by case against the corrosion data.

Q5: How long does the liner last?
A: The liner is part of the laminate, not a coating. In correct service it lasts the life of the tank - more than 25 years - and is inspected through the manway during routine checks.
